This test looks for a known variant associated with pyruvate kinase deficiency. A laboratory result distinguishes clear, carrier and affected — which is why the word “tested” without a result is not enough.

HCM
The heart needs an ultrasound.
A DNA result for the inherited conditions above says nothing about how the heart looks today. HCM is assessed by echocardiography. A result is a snapshot in time and may therefore need to be repeated later.

Frequently asked questions
Which health tests matter for Bengal cats?
Available Bengal screening includes genetic tests for PK deficiency, PRA-b and rdAc-PRA. HCM is not ruled out by that same DNA panel; the heart is assessed by ultrasound. The appropriate screening for an individual cat should be decided with the attending veterinarian.
What does “genetically clear” mean?
It means that the particular disease-associated variant was not detected by that genetic test. It is not a promise that the cat will never become ill and does not replace clinical examination or preventive care.
Where can I see the Bengalinators cats’ results?
Each cat’s profile lists only results that are actually available, including the test, result, laboratory or examining practice and date.
