Designing a home for Bengal cats: five useful zones

For an active cat, floor area is not the only measure. A considered home provides different functions and allows movement, observation and rest without constantly buying new toys.

1. Routes above the floor

A stable tall cat tree, secure wall shelves or designated bookcase space increase usable territory. Non-slip surfaces and more than one way up and down prevent a cat from becoming trapped in a dead end.

Climbing routes need not cover every wall. Two or three well-placed levels can connect favourite places and make movement part of everyday life.

2. Views and 3. retreats

A secure window place offers changing sound, light and outdoor movement. Tilted windows require safeguards; a balcony needs a robust cat net or another suitable fall-protection system.

Activity and rest belong together. Caves, covered baskets and elevated places provide choice. In a multi-cat home, no single cat should be able to control every desirable resting place.

4. Interactive play and 5. distributed resources

An open area for wand play, searching games or clicker training is more useful than a permanently overflowing toy basket. Rotate a few items so familiar things become interesting again after a break.

Distribute water, food, litter trays, scratching places and resting areas around the home. This creates choice and prevents another cat from blocking access to every resource.

  • Make height safely usable
  • Secure windows and balconies
  • Offer retreats on several levels
  • Do not place every resource side by side
